Why bother learning about brain MRI?
History, examination, radiology, and neuropharmacology are the four essential tools for every neurologist.
When it comes to the central nervous system, history and examination localize the pathology — then comes radiology to help identify it and guide treatment. A patient with hemiplegia can be anything from ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, demyelinating disease, or tumor. With history and exam we can only reach the most likely etiology, but we will not be definite without imaging.
Roughly twenty-five percent of our skill depends on how good we are at reading a brain or spine MRI. A good neurologist shouldn’t let their career depend on how skillful the neuro-radiologist is.
